As from 01/07/2003 all units for hazardous areas must comply with the new ATEX directive when they are brought to the EU market. The directive details the minimum requirements for developing, producing and bringing to market units for gas Ex and dust Ex areas. The goal of ifm electronic was to obtain the permission to develop, produce and bring to market inductive and capacitive position sensors with ATEX approvals of the highest safety level, category 1 (suitable for use in gas Ex zone 0, dust Ex zone 20). To do so, ifm electronic gmbh located in Essen had to be certified and the manufacturing plants ifm electronic gmbh in Tettnang and ifm syntron gmbh had to be audited. In February 2001 the certification was successfully completed. ifm electronic gmbh in Essen now holds the certification number "DMT 01 ATEX ZQS/E135" in accordance with ATEX.
